Babar and Father Christmas is a long read, as are most original Babar stories, so be prepared. However, as a child, I loved Babar! The fantasy-land of Elephant country is quite fun and the apparent political statements of colonialism were completely lost on me. Some critics deem Babar to be morally and politically offensive unfortunately, so it is best to read them with a discerning eye and make your own decisions about discussions with your little ones. Given their 30s and 40s time period, and their French origin they can be rather difficult to appreciate. The author and illustrator: Jean de Brunhoff (9 December 1899 – 16 October 1937) was a French writer and illustrator remembered best for creating the Babar series of children's books concerning a fictional elephant, the first of which was published in 1931.When approaching stories like Babar, there are a few important things to keep in mind. Babar and Father Christmas become fast friends and Father Christmas even gets to take a much-needed rest in the tropical climate of Babar's country. This ultimately leads to Babar's realization that the Elephants' Country needs to be included in Santa's regular route, so he goes to heroic lengths to make his children's' wishes come true. In this particular story, Arthur, Pom, Flora, and Alexander, the royal elephant children, together with their monkey pal, Zephir, write Father Christmas a wish list letter and are disappointed when they don't get a reply. BABAR is an elephant character who first appeared here, in 1931, in the French children's book Histoire de Babar by Jean de Brunhoff.
